Netherlands: Ware Potato Harvest Falls 27% While Contract Prices Drop Up to 25%

Dutch potato growers are losing on two fronts this season. DCA Market Intelligence sees the national ware crop at around 3 million tonnes, some 27 percent below 2025, as area fell by about 15 percent and yields by about 14 percent. Across Germany, France, Belgium and the Netherlands, the combined crop is put near 20.8 million tonnes, almost a quarter less than last season. Normally such a shortfall would lift farm incomes, but most processing volume is contracted, and those contracts were signed at prices roughly a quarter lower for early deliveries and 15 to 17 percent lower for storage-season supply. Only growers with free-market potatoes profit from the rising spot trade. Shoppers barely notice, as fries prices depend more on energy, oil, labour and packaging than on raw potatoes. The DCA figures are an estimate, and the area changes for other countries come via a trade publication rather than national statistics.
The Dutch harvest of ware potatoes will be about 3 million tonnes in 2026. That is around 27% less than last year, according to DCA Market Intelligence. The estimate was reported on 25 September.
Two factors explain the drop. The area of ware potatoes fell by about 15%. Yields per hectare are about 14% lower after a hot and dry summer.

DCA estimates the combined crop of Germany, France, Belgium and the Netherlands at about 20.8 million tonnes. That is almost a quarter below last season.

Area cuts were large across the region. According to Potato News Today, which reported the DCA data, planted area fell by around 16.6% in Belgium, about 10% in France and 11% in Germany.
Contract prices lower despite a small crop
Growers will not gain much from the smaller crop, DCA said. Most processing potatoes are grown under contracts signed before planting. After the large 2025 crop, processors cut contract prices.
For early deliveries, contract prices are about a quarter below last year. For potatoes delivered later in the storage season, contract prices are generally 15% to 17% lower.
“For growers, the situation is different. They harvest considerably fewer tonnes per hectare this year,” said John Ramaker, analyst at DCA.
British trade weekly Farmers Guardian reported a similar split from the PotatoEurope event in mid-September. Free-buy prices were rising on drought, while contract prices for 2026/27 were down by about 20% in many cases.
Consumers see little change
In Dutch supermarkets, private-label frozen fries cost about €1.50 per kg. Branded fries cost €2.65 per kg on average, DCA said. Raw potatoes are only one part of the cost of fries. Processing, energy, oil, labour, packaging and transport also count.

A smaller crop usually lifts grower income through higher prices. This year, fixed contracts limit that effect. Growers with low yields and lower contract prices face a double hit. The gap could shape contract talks and planting decisions for 2027.
